Knicks roll into Round 2, await 76ers-Celtics winner and wonder if they've found their best groove

The New York Knicks are moving on with something more valuable than a series win: a genuine sense that their identity has crystallized at the right time. They’re into the second round, waiting on the winner of 76ers–Celtics, and the question around the league is whether this version of the Knicks is the best, most sustainable iteration of the Tom Thibodeau era.

New York’s formula looks simple, but it’s been sharpened. The Knicks are leaning into a physical, possession-heavy style, winning the margins with rebounding, toughness, and disciplined half-court defense. Offensively, they’ve embraced a clear hierarchy, trusting their primary creators to dictate tempo while role players stay firmly in their lanes. It’s not flashy, but it travels in the postseason.

The looming matchup with either Philadelphia or Boston will test that groove in very different ways. Against the 76ers, the task would center on containing an MVP-caliber big man, managing foul trouble, and surviving long stretches of grind-it-out half-court basketball. A series with the Celtics would tilt toward perimeter versatility, switching, and the challenge of defending multiple elite wings over seven games.

What’s notable is that New York no longer feels like a plucky underdog. Around front offices and scouting departments, the Knicks are increasingly viewed as a “program” team: consistent habits, clear roles, and a style that doesn’t evaporate when the shooting cools. That’s exactly the kind of profile that tends to age well deep into a playoff run.

There are still questions. Can their primary scorers maintain efficiency against a top-tier defense that has a full week to scheme them? Will the heavy minutes load for key players catch up in a long series? And can the offense generate enough easy points if the whistle tightens and the game slows?

For now, though, New York enters Round 2 with continuity, confidence, and clarity. In a postseason defined by matchups, the Knicks have something sturdier: a groove that feels less like a hot streak and more like who they are.
